These three commands are likely linked in Paul’s mind to the working of the Holy Spirit: joy (1:6; Rom 14:17; Gal 5:22), prayer (Rom 8:26-27; 1 Cor 14:15; Eph 6:18; Phil 1:19), and thanksgiving (1 Cor 14:16).
